Is Fortnite OK for an 8-year-old?
By Boundly Team, Infinite Future · Last updated

The short answer
Fortnite's main Battle Royale mode is rated T (Teen, 13+) by the ESRB and PEGI 12 in Europe, so on ratings alone it's aimed at older kids than 8. Many families still say yes, and Epic's controls make that workable: an under-13 account starts with voice chat, free-text chat and real-money purchases off, and you can limit play to lower-rated modes such as LEGO Fortnite (E10+, PEGI 7). For most 8-year-olds, the bigger questions are who they talk to and what they spend, not the violence.
What the ratings actually say
Fortnite isn't one game with one rating. It's a platform with several modes, and they're rated separately.
| Mode | ESRB (US) | PEGI (Europe/UK) |
|---|---|---|
| Battle Royale | T (Teen): Violence; Users Interact, In-Game Purchases (ESRB) | PEGI 12: Violence, In-game purchases (PEGI) |
| LEGO Fortnite | E10+: Fantasy Violence; Users Interact, In-Game Purchases (ESRB) | PEGI 7: Violence, In-game purchases (listed as LEGO Fortnite Odyssey) (PEGI) |
| Fortnite platform overall | Varies by island | Parental Guidance Recommended, because it hosts user-made content (PEGI) |
ESRB defines T as “generally suitable for ages 13 and up” and E10+ as “generally suitable for ages 10 and up” (ESRB Ratings Guide). PEGI 12 allows slightly more graphic fantasy violence and mild language; PEGI 7 may include possibly frightening scenes (PEGI). The ESRB describes Fortnite's guns and violence as cartoon-like, with no blood or gore (ESRB parent guide, 2023).
Ratings cover the game's own content, not other players. ESRB's Users Interact label means chat and user-made content are not rated (ESRB). That's the part to plan for.
User-made islands carry their own ratings too. Epic's Fortnite Content Ratings control works per island, and islands still being built in Creative or Unreal Editor for Fortnite aren't moderated or rated (Epic Parental Controls).
What happens when an 8-year-old signs up
Epic has no hard minimum age. A player who says they're under 13 (or under their country's age of digital consent, if that's higher) gets a Cabined Account (Epic: Cabined Accounts). Until a parent gives consent, it turns off:
- Voice chat and free-text chat
- Real-money purchases
- Custom display names, recommendations and marketing
- Linking outside services and Sign in with Epic
You lift cabining from the “Your Child Created an Epic Games Account” email; it also lifts when your kid ages up. Since June 2025, cabined accounts can add Fortnite gift cards to their balance (Epic: Cabined Accounts). So the honest first step is simple: make sure the account has your kid's real birthday.
Chat: what an 8-year-old can and can't do
Epic has separate Epic Voice Chat Permission and Epic Text Chat Permission settings: Everybody, Friends, team members, & connections, Friends Only, or Nobody. For a child under 10, the most open setting is Friends Only; under 13, it's Friends, team members, & connections (Epic Parental Controls; Fortnite Help: chat options).
- Nobody still allows preset safe phrases, so your kid can still say “Good game”.
- Filter Mature Language is always on under 13, and voice and text reporting is always on under 18.
- Require a PIN to Add Friends stops new friends without you. It doesn't cover friends lists on PlayStation, Xbox, Switch or Steam.
- A newer toggle, Allow Voice and Written Communication with AI Features, controls talking to AI characters in Fortnite.
All four points are from Epic's Parental Controls page. One gap: Epic's controls don't cover console voice or party chat, so set those on the Xbox, PlayStation or Switch too.
Spending and V-Bucks
In 2022, Epic agreed to pay $520 million to settle FTC allegations: a $275 million penalty for violating children's privacy law (COPPA) and $245 million in refunds. The FTC alleged Epic used “dark patterns” to trick players into purchases they didn't mean to make, and that voice and text chat were on by default, exposing kids and teens to bullying and harassment (FTC, Dec 2022).
Today, Require a PIN for Epic Games Payments asks for your PIN before a purchase, and under-13 accounts get an automatic $100 a day cap on Epic payments. Neither covers purchases made through a console store or spending V-Bucks already in the account. You can also turn Allow Paid Random Items off (Epic Parental Controls). For an 8-year-old, a fixed gift-card amount is often easier to manage than an open card.
If you say yes: set these 5 things
- Set a PIN. Go to Epic's parental controls page, sign in as your kid's account, click Parental Controls → Set Parental Controls PIN, and enter a 6-digit PIN. On console, check the Account ID matches the one in the game (Epic Help).
- Choose a content rating. Under Fortnite Content Ratings, pick a limit. E10+ keeps LEGO Fortnite open but blocks Teen islands, including Battle Royale. Consider turning off Allow Creative Mode and Unreal Editor for Fortnite too.
- Lock down chat. Set voice and text chat to Friends Only or Nobody, turn on Require a PIN to Add Friends, and decide on the AI-features toggle.
- Lock down spending. Turn on Require a PIN for Epic Games Payments, turn off Allow Paid Random Items, and set purchase controls on the console or phone as well.
- Set time limits. Under Time Limit Controls, set a daily total or time windows. Play Time and Create Time now have separate limits. Turn on the weekly Time Reports Email.
Steps 2–5 are on Epic's Parental Controls page. Settings apply to Fortnite, the Epic Games Store and the Launcher (Epic Help), and time limits follow the account across devices. Your kid gets an in-game warning at 30 minutes left, and you can add time from the game's sidebar with your PIN.
How it compares to Roblox at 8
Roblox now puts 5–8-year-olds in Roblox Kids accounts: games rated Minimal or Mild from a vetted catalog, with all chat off unless a linked parent allows in-game chat (Roblox newsroom, Apr 2026). Fortnite's main modes have official ESRB and PEGI ratings, and its user-made islands get their own age ratings. Roblox is mostly user-made games, and their maturity labels come from a questionnaire each game's own creator fills out (Roblox Help). With either one, check the actual games your kid plays, not just the label.
