Is Roblox safe for kids?

By Boundly Team, Infinite Future · Last updated

The short answer

It depends a lot on how it's set up. Roblox has added age checks for chat, age-based Roblox Kids and Roblox Select accounts, and stronger parental controls — but state attorneys general and investigators allege that inappropriate games and predators still reach children. A linked parent account, tight settings and a regular look at the games your kid plays add a layer the defaults don't.

What Roblox does to protect kids

  • Age checks to chat. Since January 2026, users worldwide need an age check (facial age estimation or ID) before they can chat, and they mostly chat with people in similar age groups (Roblox newsroom, Nov 2025; Jan 2026).
  • Account tiers by age. Roblox Kids (5–8) and Roblox Select (9–15) limit games to vetted catalogs and switch most chat off by default; they rolled out worldwide in June 2026 (press release).
  • Maturity labels. Games are labeled Minimal, Mild, Moderate or Restricted; Restricted is for age-checked adults only (Roblox Help).
  • Link blocking. Links are blocked in chat for everyone, and since June 2026 users under 16 can't share or view social media links on Roblox (press release).
  • Parental controls. A linked parent can block specific games, limit chat and spending, and see screen time and top games (Roblox Help: Overview).

What investigators and lawsuits found

These are allegations and findings from public filings and reports — not court rulings. They're worth knowing because they describe gaps that settings alone may not close.

  • Low ratings, adult content. Florida's attorney general alleges that games rated Minimal or Mild and open to young accounts contained violent and sexualized content, and that an investigator posing as an 8-year-old found sexual roleplay and violent games (Florida AG complaint). Hindenburg Research reported similar findings in October 2024 (report).
  • Four states are suing. Florida, Kentucky, Texas and Louisiana have sued Roblox over child safety (FL, KY, TX, LA).
  • Moving kids off Roblox. Lawsuits say predators meet kids in Roblox games, then move them to Snapchat and Discord (federal MDL suits; Kentucky AG complaint).
  • Re-uploads. Hindenburg Research reported re-uploads of games Roblox had already removed (report), so new problem games can appear week to week.
  • Self-reported labels. Maturity labels come from a questionnaire the game's own creator fills out (Roblox Help).

What parents can do today

  1. Link a parent account so you can manage settings from your own phone (guide).
  2. Set content maturity to Minimal or Mild and keep Sensitive issues off (ratings explained).
  3. Turn off direct chat and set friends chat to Trusted friends.
  4. Check the games your kid actually plays in Top games (how).
  5. Block the ones that worry you — blocking works whatever the rating (how).
  6. Look again every week — or turn on Roblox's weekly Activity updates email.
  7. Talk with your kid: if anyone asks them to “add me on Discord or Snap”, they should tell you, and you can block and report that person.

So — should my kid play?

That's your call, and it can change as your kid grows. Roblox's own controls give you a real base to work from, especially on a Roblox Kids or Select account. What they can't do is tell you which of the games your kid played this week are a problem for your family. That's the gap a weekly look at Top games closes. Note that parents lose some controls at 13 and game blocking ends at 16 (what changes).
