How do Roblox parental controls work in 2026?

The short answer
You link your own Roblox parent account to your kid's account, then manage their settings from your phone: content maturity, blocked games, chat, spending and screen time. Since mid-2026, kids also get an account tier by age — Roblox Kids (5–8), Roblox Select (9–15) or standard Roblox (16+) — which sets what they can see by default.
1. Link your parent account
- On your kid's Roblox, go to Settings → Parental Controls → Add parent.
- Enter your email. Roblox sends you a link.
- Open the link. Tap Create account, or Use existing account if you have one.
- Prove you're an adult. Roblox will ask for an ID, a credit card, or a face scan.
- Tap Agree to link to your kid.
In most regions parents of children under 18 can link, and more than one parent can link to the same child (Roblox Help: Parental Controls FAQ). No time for an account? Your kid can tap Ask in Person and hand you their device to use Parent mode — not available everywhere yet (Roblox Help: How to Link Your Account).
“Settings” means: on a computer, the gear at the top right; in the Roblox app, tap More (bottom right), then Settings. On the web you can also open Roblox Parental Controls directly — it opens in your browser, so sign in with your parent account, not your kid's. If you land on Account Info, tap Parental Controls in the menu.
2. Know your kid's account tier
| Tier | Ages | Games by default | Chat by default |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roblox Kids | 5–8 | Minimal and Mild, from a vetted catalog | All chat off; a linked parent can allow in-game chat |
| Roblox Select | 9–15 | Up to Moderate, from a vetted catalog | Limited, by age group; direct chat in games off by default |
| Roblox | 16+ | Everything except Restricted (18+) | On, after an age check |
Roblox announced the tiers in April 2026 and rolled them out worldwide on June 16, 2026 (Roblox newsroom; press release). Vetted catalogs leave out sensitive issues, social hangouts and free-form drawing games by default (Roblox safety). Parents can allow specific games outside the catalog, except Restricted ones. Since January 2026, everyone needs an age check to chat at all (Roblox newsroom, Jan 2026).
3. See which games they play
On your kid's page in Parental Controls, look for Top games (it may say Top experiences, or sit inside Screen time → Manage). It lists their top 20 games from the last week with play time and rating (Roblox Help: Overview). Full steps: how to see what games your kid plays.
4. Set the content level and block games
- Go to Settings → Parental Controls → your kid → Settings you manage → Content restrictions.
- Tap Content maturity and slide to Minimal (strictest) or Mild.
- Go back. Make sure Sensitive issues is Off.
- Tap Preview games and pick No one.
- Then block specific games in Blocked games.
Ratings come from the game creator's own questionnaire, so the slider alone won't catch everything — see maturity ratings explained and how to block a game.
5. Turn down chat with strangers
- In Settings you manage, tap Communication → Experience chat. Turn Direct chat Off (strictest: turn Experience chat off too).
- Tap Chat and party with friends and set Friends chat to Trusted friends.
- Under Visibility & private servers, set Show current game to Trusted friends and Private servers to No one (or Friends).
Roblox blocks links in chat for everyone, and since June 2026 users under 16 can't share or view social media links on profiles or game pages (press release). There's no parent switch for “move to another app” requests — if someone asks your kid to add them elsewhere, block and report them.
6. Limit spending
- In Settings you manage, tap Spending restrictions → Monthly spending limit. Type an amount (0 means no spending) and tap Update.
- Tap Spending notifications and pick All transactions.
Limits reset each calendar month and stop applying at 13; spending alerts keep working and need a linked account (Roblox Help: Monthly Spending Limits; Overview).
7. Get the weekly email
Turn on Settings you manage → Activity updates and Roblox emails you your kid's screen time and top games every week (Roblox Help: Overview).
