What do Roblox maturity ratings mean?
By Boundly Team, Infinite Future · Last updated
The short answer
Roblox labels each game Minimal, Mild, Moderate or Restricted, from gentlest to most mature; Restricted is for age-checked adults (18+) only. The labels come from a questionnaire the game's own creator fills out, and parents can cap the level their kid sees in Parental Controls.
What each label means
| Label | What it can include |
|---|---|
| Minimal | Occasional mild violence, light unrealistic blood, occasional mild fear |
| Mild | Repeated mild violence, heavy unrealistic blood, mild crude humor, repeated mild fear |
| Moderate | Moderate violence, light realistic blood, moderate crude humor, unplayable gambling content, social hangouts without private spaces, free-form drawing tools, moderate fear |
| Restricted | Strong violence, heavy realistic blood, romantic themes, unplayable gambling, alcohol, strong language — 18+ age-checked only |
Games with social hangouts or free-form creation are limited to age-checked users 16 and up (Roblox Help: Content Maturity Ratings; Content Maturity FAQ). Older pages said Restricted was 17+; the current Help Center says 18+.
Two more labels to know
- Content May Vary means the creator didn't complete the full questionnaire. These games aren't shown to kids under 9; kids 9–15 can play one only if a parent allows that specific game; 16–17 after an age check.
- Sensitive issues is a descriptor for social, political or religious themes. By default it's for age-checked users 16+, and a parent can turn on Allow sensitive issues.
Who decides a game's rating?
The game's creator. Each label comes from a questionnaire the creator fills out about their game's content (Roblox Help). That's why parents shouldn't treat a label as a guarantee: Florida's attorney general alleges that games rated Minimal or Mild and open to young accounts contained violent and sexualized content (Florida AG complaint), and Hindenburg Research reported similar findings (report). These are allegations, not court findings.
Which accounts can see which ratings
| Account | Ages | Ratings by default |
|---|---|---|
| Roblox Kids | 5–8 | Minimal and Mild, from a vetted catalog |
| Roblox Select | 9–15 | Up to Moderate, from a vetted catalog |
| Roblox | 16+ | Everything except Restricted |
| Age-checked adults | 18+ | Restricted too |
Parents can allow specific games outside the catalog for Kids and Select accounts — except Restricted games (Roblox newsroom, Apr 2026; Roblox safety).
How to change the level for your kid
- Go to Settings → Parental Controls → your kid → Settings you manage.
- Tap Content restrictions, then Content maturity.
- Slide to Minimal (strictest), Mild, Moderate or Restricted.
- Go back and make sure Sensitive issues is Off.
- Tap Preview games and pick No one (unrated test games by friends).
Kids under 13 can lower the level themselves but need your permission to raise it (Content Maturity FAQ). Then block any specific game that worries you — a block works whatever the rating (how to block a game).
Are the labels changing?
Roblox has said it will start moving to IARC ratings — ESRB in the US, PEGI in Europe and the UK — later in 2026 (Roblox newsroom; press release). As of October 27, 2026 we hadn't found confirmation that the switch has started, so the four labels above are still what parents see.
